چکیده

Previous investigations into the optimal design of instructions for complex tasks have often failed to account for the possibility of individual differences in instruction efficacy. We examined how individuals with various cognitive styles differ in how they make use of and learn from instructions with differing levels of detail. Participants completed a realistic photo-manipulation task and a realistic graph-creation task within the computer applications GIMP and SPSS’s PASW, respectively. Detailed instructions included justifications for each task’s steps, while Simple instructions did not. Participants performed each task twice. Differences between first and second completion times were analyzed with respect to level of instruction detail and four dimensions of cognitive style/skill: field dependence/independence, cognitive flexibility, working memory capacity, and reading speed. We examine the extent to which higher field dependence is related to more learning from Detailed instructions, and discuss the implications for instruction design.

‌‌‌‌‌Recourse Allocation in Young and Elderly Adults

Objectives: The role of cognitive process for postural control was shown in dual task studies. However, there was no definite evidence how verbal instructions influence the allocation of attention to postural control. This study determined whether young and elderly adult are able to deliberately control the resource allocation when performing a sensorimotor and cognitive task simultaneously and...

The effect of increase in task cognitive complexity on Iranian EFL learners’ accuracy and linguistic complexity: A test of Robinson’s Cognition Hypothesis

Designing a task with a reasonable level of cognitive complexity has always been important for syllabus designers, teachers, as well as researchers. This is because task manipulation may lead to different results in oral production. The present study was an attempt to explore the effect of this  manipulation  -  based  on  Robinson’s  resource-directing  model  (reasoning  demands, number of el...

Cognitive Task Complexity and Iranian EFL Learners’ Written Linguistic Performance across Writing Proficiency Levels

Recently tasks, as the basic units of syllabi, and the cognitive complexity, as the criterion for sequencing them, have caught many second language researchers’ attention. This study sought to explore the effect of utilizing the cognitively simple and complex tasks on high- and low-proficient EFL Iranian writers’ linguistic performance, i.e., fluency, accuracy, lexical complexity, and structura...

Instructional Representation in Cognitive Modeling

Our previous research demonstrated how a cognitive architecture can inform the design of instructions. This abstract describes continuing research into instructional representations in both human instruction and cognitive architectures. In our past study (Taatgen et. al, submitted), two different forms of instructions were devised. These were dubbed “list-style” and “operator-style.” As the nam...
